Meet Our Minister Jim Short

You have clicked the ‘meet the minister site’ because you are curious about:

A- my approach to ministry
B - my personal story
C - life in the fast lane of military chaplaincy
D - whether I am quirky, skilled, or boring
E - Other

Not knowing what you are looking for I offer you these bits and bobs:-

I think of my mind as a museum of all sorts, and my life is like that too… which means you will meet in me this strong roasted blend of clergy-advocate-collector-parent-citizen-chaplain-spouse-mental health survivor-contemplative-neighbour.

I am called by God, Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit to be helpful.

Chronological summary of parts of my life:

Born 1957 in Hamilton, Ontario – steel town

  • Studied history at McMaster University, Hamilton
  • Studied theology at Queen’s University, Kingston
  • Ordained and married Cathy, 1982
  • 1982 Settled in the out port of Carmanville NFLD, a 5-point United Church Charge
  • Had first child, Katy
  • 1985 Called to Kimbourne Park United, then East York, Toronto
  • Had sons Nicholas and Benjamin
  • Trained as a Spiritual Director
  • 1991 commissioned as Chaplain with Canadian Armed Forces Reserves
  • 1992 Called to Duncan United Church, Duncan, Vancouver Island
  • 2001 Called to Ladner United Church, Ladner /Delta
  • 2002 promoted to Major in reserve chaplaincy
  • 2007-2008 trained for and deployed to Afghanistan with Military
  • Gifted with Grandchildren Barbara (2014), Emerson (2015)

Faith formation:

  • Raised from diapers to Levi jeans to wool trouser in the United Church of Canada
  • Shaped by history, poetry, the Bible, spiritual direction, fiction, & Leonard Cohen
  • Daily mantras:
    • we live by God’s grace;
    • nothing separates us from the love of God
  • The rare mystical experiences I have had still inspire me
  • I read lots, in many genres, and it all mushes together in a forms of wisdom
  • Prayer is both unconscious and intentional in my life. I have been found muttering as I walk along the sidewalks
  • Trained and honed as a pastoral, advocacy, chaplaincy style clergy

Quick Facts in no particular priority:

  • I really do (often, often) have time and spontaneity to meet you for coffee
  • If you want company, comfort, solace while you are ill or in hospital I will try to find the person who can best meet your need…whether it is me or not
  • Wondering about the spirit, life and teachings of Jesus and want mentoring? I can arrange times for spiritual direction with you or connect you with a study group
  • Young people and children like my office and the mounds of curios there, some adults find it overwhelming
  • Tell me a book title or author you like…I like to find things for people, second hand at the thrift store or a garage sale
  • I am a member of the Ladner Business Association because Ladner United has "a heart for God in the heart of the village"
  • The communication-media revolution has my attention. I like my cell phone, iPad, and the internet
  • Ladner is a beautiful place to live…I am grateful

If all of this leaves you with a sense of me as a person whose days are full and long and complex…that is true.

The givens of my week:

  • I take most of Mondays and Tuesdays for time off.
  • I parade (work) on most Wednesday evenings with my reserve military unit, The Seaforth Highlanders of Canada
  • I like to cat nap and wish I slept more.
  • I often talk or text with Cathy and my family during the day.
  • Late each evening I sit in my recliner, talking with Cathy in her recliner (we call them our ships) doodling in my art pad while she edits her photos on the computer.
  • I am proud of my adult children and glad they are taking on leadership roles in our community and world.  I trust them with my life.
  • I am moved and grateful to be a grandfather.  I have tears at times watching little Barbara and Emerson.
  • I love ministry and the wide spectrum of circumstances and personalities I engage through it.  I crave meaningful and random encounters.

Something Specific about my years at Ladner United Church

The officially-designated Heritage Building of Ladner United (built 1893) needed a $3 million repair, restoration and rebuild.  Since coming to Ladner in 2001, I worked with the dedicated congregation of Ladner United, and its leaders to help them save the building.  In 2012, the builder Steve Knoblauch came along and befriended our congregation and myself.  This building project required every skill I acquired as clergy, padre, community minded civilian, spouse and parent to shepherd the congregational team and professionals to accomplish what seemed almost impossible.  The renovated and rebuilt Ladner United Church re-opened in April 2014.
