Volunteer Opportunities

Something For Everyone

Volunteering weekly or even once a month, is a great way to feel a part of our community of faith, get to know others and have fun! We rely heavily on our volunteers, who are an integral part of our community of faith’s life here at Ladner United Church. We offer a wide variety of opportunities; check the list below and see which one is a fit for you. If you’re interested in volunteering, please fill out the form to the right or contact the church office.

Worship

Worship volunteers are active participants in the church services. They might read the Scripture, lead the Prayers of the People or the Land Acknowledgment, help serve communion, or light the Christ Candle.

Welcome Hosts

Welcome hosts are usually the first to greet anyone who enters the church for worship services, sharing a smile and a warm welcome. They help newcomers feel at home and assist those needing to find seats. They pass the offering plates during the service, and usher people when we celebrate The Lord’s Supper (communion).

Tech Support for Worship Services and Other Events

Tech volunteers ensure that folks who are unable to make it to church in person can still enjoy the services virtually from home via Zoom. Zoom hosting can be done from the church or from your home. Tech volunteers also help with other church services and events that require audio and visual support. We provide training on our sound and video systems; they’re easy to learn. Church events are volunteer-based; when rental groups require audio/visual support, we offer paid opportunities.

Kitchen Help

LUC has a commercial-sized kitchen that is often used for church gatherings and events hosted by the community. Kitchen helpers help ensure that these occasions run smoothly, especially when catered food and beverages are being served. Church events are volunteer-based; when rental groups require a staffed kitchen, we offer paid opportunities.

Coffee Hour

We offer Coffee Hour in the Celebration Centre every Thursday from 2pm-4pm and after worship on Sundays every second week. All are welcome to drop in for coffee hour, including members of the public. Volunteers prepare coffee, tea and juice, as well as serve treats for all to enjoy. This is a great opportunity to be of service while making new connections and friends.

Extreme Weather Shelter

The Extreme Weather Shelter season runs from October until April and is open on the nights of Extreme Weather notifications. The EWS provides those in need with a warm, safe, and welcoming place to sleep, snacks, showers, warm clothing, and supplies. We are currently seeking volunteers to help with laundering and setting up the space for our guests when the shelter is active.

TLC for LUC

TLC for LUC is organized a few times a year where all who aren’t afraid to get their hands a little dirty tend to the landscaping and grounds around the church, from trimming hedges and pulling weeds to power-washing the patio, benches and sides of the building. Watch for an announcement in the weekly newsletter for when TLC for LUC is happening and bring your garden tools!

Christmas Bazaar

The annual Christmas Bazaar every November is our biggest, busiest fundraising and volunteer event of the year. The whole church is transformed into a place of yuletide wonder with beautiful high-quality gift baskets, silent auction items, home baking, collectibles, crafts, and a delicious lunch prepared by our Kitchen Helpers. As an occasion that welcomes hundreds of visitors from surrounding communities, it truly takes a village to bring it life, and there is an opportunity for everyone to help and enjoy the festivities.
