2003 Peace Pole to Be Re-dedicated Oct. 26

Two decades ago, Ladner Village and the surrounding area hosted several poles that promoted peace in the world, created by Delta Senior Secondary students. The 4×4” timbers featured peace messages in several languages, inscribed in the wood.

Many of the poles have disappeared over the years; the one at Ladner United Church was taken down a decade ago when the church building underwent a major renovation.

On Sunday, Oct. 26, Peace Sunday in The United Church of Canada, the local church will be re-dedicating the pole, which has been re-installed at the front of the building, facing 48 Ave.

Tod Jensen, the teacher who headed the Peace Pole project, will be present to share some of the history of the poles and their student creators. The short dedication will begin at 11:30 a.m., outside the front door near the re-installed pole.

“Seldom in most of our lifetimes has the world needed the call for peace more than it does today,” said Ladner United minister Nancy Painter. “It’s a timely reminder.”

Ladner United Church is located at 4960 48 Ave. in Ladner. Everyone is welcome to attend, whether they made a pole, the poles are new to them, or they have fond memories of the timbers promoting their message of peace around Ladner in years past.
